Overview of the Doctor of Philosophy - Joint Doctoral Degree

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) gives students the opportunity to explore in-depth a research project that they are passionate about. Students will independently research a specific topic under the guidance of a supervisor and produce a thesis no more than 100,000 words. The research will represent a significant, original contribution to human knowledge.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for admission as a candidate for a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), an applicant must:

• Have a Bachelor Degree with at least a 2A Honours (AQF level 8)
• Have a Masters Degree (AQF level 9) which incorporates satisfactory research preparation equivalent to at least 12 credit points
• Be enrolled as a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) candidate in the University (AQF level 9) and satisfy the Dean of Graduate Studies with evidence of the ability to complete a Doctoral Degree (Research) successfully (AQF level 10) within the enrolment period specified in the GRD Regulations
• Have a Bachelor Degree (AQF Level 7) and satisfy the Dean of Graduate Research Studies with evidence of substantive and significant scholarly or professional attainments providing satisfactory research preparation the equivalent of AQF level 8 or 9

English Requirements

Students must meet a minimum standard in English to study at Murdoch, which for most courses can be demonstrated by providing evidence that they have completed Year 11 and 12 in Australia at any level if they are a domestic student, or through either English proficiency tests, university preparation courses, English language courses, previous tertiary study or vocational education.

Other Requirements

Some students propose to carry out research in the course of their current employment. The conditions of this kind of enrolment must be agreed by the research candidate, their employer and the Research Degrees and Scholarships Committee.
